Armistice Day Observance
Date: November 11, 2005
Place: Pioneer Courthouse Square, Portland, Oregon
Time: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Armistice Day, the truce ending the First World War came at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. The world celebrated, and called it "Peace Day" to honor military veterans and the peace they secured.
November 11th became Armistice Day, a day that in 1926 the Congress proclaimed “…it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations…” A legal federal holiday was established in 1938, and in 1954 Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day.
On this November 11th, Veterans for Peace, Chapter 72 (Oregon Chapter) will not be marching in any parade. They will not be standing in a crowd of veterans and their families and friends, listening to the same speeches that have been given too many times. Instead, they will be gathered in observance of Armistice Day and reflecting on how it was co-opted from a day ”…designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations;…” to one of a celebration of militarism. They will be following President Eisenhower’s call to “… reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace…”, gathered together away from the drums and brass bands, away from the flyovers of the F15s, away from the reminders of the lies that have caused so much pain and suffering for naught.
All Oregonians are welcome and encouraged to join in a Peace Circle with Veterans for Peace at Pioneer Courthouse Square at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, to share in stories, observations, and solemn observance to honor sacrifices of the World's veterans by embracing the goal of Peace for all the Peoples of the World.

Martin, nice post. Good on ya lad. I'll hoist something about sunset or so for all y'all, with a tear in my eye for Howdy's dearly departed, and all our fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters and sons and daughters who served.
May all your big red meats be rare and open wood fire grilled without mishap.
